There are two versions of Brother cartridges for these machines. The standard yield Brother TN-540 cartridge holds 150g and is rated for 3,000 pages. The high yield Brother TN-570 cartridge holds 220g and is rated for 6,500 pages. The reason the high yield cartridge gets double the yield by using 50% more toner has to do with this engines unique toner sensing system. These cartridges routinely leave as much as 80 grams of toner in the supply chamber, all the while showing toner out and refusing to print! Shaking the cartridge at this point will only get you another 25-30 pages before the printer shuts down again. In our tests, we have seen a maximum of 2,200 pages from an OEM standard cartridge, with 72g. toner left in the supply hopper. In order to get the "OEM Stated Yield" of 6,500 pages, we are supplying toner in 220g bottles. TN-540 cartridges can easily be upgraded to the high yield TN-570 by using the 220g load.
As with the Brother TN-570 cartridges, the reason the high yield cartridge gets double the yield by using approximately 50% more toner has to do with this engines unique toner sensing system. These cartridges routinely leave as much as 80 grams of toner in the supply chamber, all the while showing toner out and refusing to print! Shaking the cartridge at this point will only get you another 25-30 pages before the printer shuts down again.
The remaining toner (80g or so!), MUST be completely removed from the supply chamber before adding new toner. Failure to do this will cause back grounding. In addition to contaminating the toner cartridge, this will also contaminate the cleaning section of the drum cartridge, which in turn will contaminate the toner cartridge again.
